A STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON TEENAGERS IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY – Dhanusree Harini

ABSTRACT:

Social media may be a compelling instrument for communication, almost like a newspaper or a radio. Lately the internet is nearly necessary and important part of life from shopping, share emails and very importantly in education. Social media encompass a really large community, that is utilizing the internet for training and education .Unfortunately we have huge number of people including 80% of youth and teenagers utilizing the internet only for their social media presence. Approximately 200 million of wired Indian youngsters and students currently utilize social networking websites (As per the Telecom Regulatory Agency of India (TRAI)).   It’s exceedingly risky for youth and become awfully common and widespread over the foremost recent years.The main objective of this study is to understand the awareness level of usage of different social media. To study the type of social issues discussed over social networking sites,to know the impact of social networking sites on youngsters and to promote the healthy use of the media in their communities. The researchers have followed the empirical researcher with the convenience sampling method. The sample size covered by the present study is  205 samples.  From the current study it was observed that ,youngsters spending their more time on social media and that reflects and affect their social life.

INTRODUCTION:

Children are growing up surrounded by the social media life whatsapp, facebook, twitter and etc, Internet is exceptionally large evolution of technology yet once we mention the social networking, its evolution and impacts on our lifestyle are exceptionally high. They  are  influenced by media they  learn by observing, imitating, and making behaviors their own”

Teenagers with adolescents as this is the period when both biological and cognitive faculty of people go through transformation. The main objective of this study is to understand that awareness level of usage of different social media. To study the type of social issues discussed over social networking sites,to know the impact of social networking sites on youngsters.

Teenagers have the curiosity and the drive to try to to things. Teen years are considered ‘formative’ years as they could make or break the future career of an individual. Like most, teenagers are fascinated by social media, primarily because of the way it lets them engage with their friends. Even young children of all ages enjoy videos on Youtube and uploading the pictures in Facebook Lin, Vijayalakshmi, and Laczniak 2019).

The impact of those videos and photos is greater than text and strikes the chord across all age groups. Children are “wired” to find out technology things fast. Nowadays, a four year old kid can play DVD by booting up the laptop, inserting the disk then going to the right software to play. He enjoys seeing children cartoons on Youtube and uses Paintbrush to draw colourful pictures. the purpose to be noted here is that children devour things in no time as their brain is prepared to receive and accept new ideas. On the contrary, learning similar things for a 60 year old would take a much longer time, in generalRijhwani et al. 2018). Children and teens are the most motivated age group where curiosity to find out runs supreme. Due to this various problems arises out and resulted in various crimes like Cyberstalking, child pornography and they affected both physically and mentally. Government made various acts like the Information Technology Act, 2000, this  act of Indian Parliament notified on 17 October 2000. It is the primary law in india dealing with cybercrime and the electronic commerce section 66A of IT act defines the punishment for sending ” Offensive messages” through a social media. Conventions on the Rights of a Child [CRC] deal with rights of children which were defined in Article 17 of CRC, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) also play vital role in protecting the children, Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act, Defense of India Act, Police Act, Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, Regulation Act, Right to Information. The main Aim of the study is to analyse the impact of social networking sites on youngsters.
