POLITICAL INFLUENCE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE – Rozy Parveen

As a famous political scientist once remarked, “Politics is who gets what, when, and how.”Political considerations are a necessary but sometimes problematic part of criminal justice. Politics of selecting decision makers[1].

ABSTRACT

Political interference in the criminal justice undermine the separation of powers, leading to biased investigations, judicial delays and selective law enforcement. This research examines how political influence distorts judicial independence with case studies such as the Vikas Dubey encounter, the Atiq Ahmed case and the Chhote Singh trial revival demonstrating systematic failures. These cases reflects how political power can shield criminals delay justice or even results in extrajudicial killings, where enforcement legal procedures to address these issues key reforms law are necessary police independence , judicial accountability, stronger victim protections efficiency .Establishing independent prosecution departments, implementing witness protection programs and limiting governance influence in judicial appointments can significantly reduce political interference. Furthermore community participation and legal awareness campaign will help restore faith in the justice system. Other significant reforms include strict enforcement of law against police misconduct, strengthening fast track courts for politically sensitive cases, and implementing technology driven case monitoring system to prevent delays, public interest litigation and judicial activism can also play a crucial role in countering political   interference.
