VEILED IN SILENCE: THE STRUGGLE FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN INDIA – Nikhil Bajpai

Abstract:

Despite the significant progress so far, gender-based violence and women’s rights are among the greatest concerns in India. This paper examines all the various challenges that currently face women in India in terms of gender-based violence and the culture, society, and law that define it. Some common types include domestic abuse, sexual assault, dowry-related violence, and honor killings. This goes on to discuss how patriarchal tendencies, biased legislations, and societal norms create vulnerabilities in the lives of women toward gender-based violence. Further, it reviews the existing legal systems and institutional responses that are made available to counter gender-based violence, with weaknesses and shortcomings. Further, it analyzes community-led programs, advocacy, and education initiatives that help empower women and address structural inequalities. In conclusion, the study provides recommendations for holistic approaches toward addressing gender-based violence and advancing women’s rights in the context of India.

Introduction:

India, a country renowned for its rich and vibrant cultural heritage as well as its remarkably diverse population, has made significant advancements in a variety of fields over the years. However, despite these encouraging strides, the issue of women’s rights continues to be a pressing concern that requires urgent attention. Gender-based violence remains a significant challenge within the nation, highlighting the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. Women across India are subjected to various forms of violence that encompass domestic abuse, sexual assault, dowry-related violence, and honor killings, all of which are harrowing realities faced by many. These grave issues are deeply embedded in the patriarchal norms and societal attitudes that prevail in many communities, compounded by inadequate legal protection that fails to safeguard the rights and dignity of women. This paper aims to explore the complexities surrounding women’s rights and gender-based violence in India, addressing the challenges and potential solutions in promoting gender equality and ensuring women’s safety and empowerment.
