THE LEGAL ASPECTS OF BIO-MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT IN INDIA – Anusha C

ABSTRACT

Due to its potential for harm to the environment and public health, medical waste handling and disposal must be done carefully. Improper handling and disposal increases the risk of infection and injury and poses a serious risk to the health and safety of medical personnel. Unregulated biomedical waste management (BMWM) is a public health problem. This presents a grave threat to not only human health and safety but also to the environment for both current and future generations. The growing number of medical and surgical procedures, along with the use of plastic disposables and the expansion of health care facilities, has resulted in an unparalleled amount of biomedical waste (BMW). In India, Biomedical waste management is governed by the biomedical Wastes (Management & Handling Rules, 2016).
